What Works: Innovative Strategies for Teaching Art
Edited by Mary Blatherwick and Harold Pearse (2011)
Art educators from across Canada have contributed one or more of their most effective teaching strategies to this text. The writers teach from elementary to secondary to post-secondary; some are veterans while others are in their formative years of teaching. The teaching strategies included are both traditional and contemporary. They emphasize learning that is interactive, collaborative, integrative and/or interdisciplinary. Each strategy offers a new or innovative way to explore a visual art concept, theme or process. This resource can be used on its own, and also makes a great companion to other CSEA texts.

Canadian Art/Works: A Resource for Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Teachers
By Fiona Blaikie (2008)
Canadian Art/Works provides teachers in Canada and beyond with an affordable, adaptable and fabulous resource for teaching art. The book is accompanied by CD images of the featured artworks of thirty-two Canadian artists. The artworks were selected to represent variety in relation to style, genre, culture, and media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, multi-media, photography, three dimensional work, design and craft. The Conceptual Model for Canadian Art/Works is based on curricular components which parallel those found in provincial and territorial art education curricula in Canada and beyond: Visual Response, Visual Creation and Visual Concepts, with Visual Research included at the junior, intermediate and senior levels. At least one artwork is featured and inspires the activities in each unit plan. Unit plans begin with a focus on the featured artwork/s through Visual Response. From the junior level onwards, Visual Research follows in which students select and explore artwork/s within the same genre. Visual Creation activities flow from Visual Response and Visual Research, while Visual Concepts are infused throughout the lessons within each unit plan. Criterion referenced assessment rubrics conclude each unit plan. An extensive glossary of terms is provided. Canadian Art/Works provides neophyte and seasoned art teachers with fresh new ideas, infusing art teaching with ideas related to students' lives, current issues, culture and the visual world all around us, in addition to the art education basics we know are important to teach.
